On the feast of St. Athanasius, May 2, 2022

Friends of Our Lady,

The month of May is the month in which we honor our mothers! I have been blessed to have a “star” for a mother who taught me by her example and instruction to honor our heavenly Mother! Roseanita Coffey, my mother, led a life dedicated to promoting a love for Life, Our Lady, and her Son in the Eucharist. As the fifth of nine children, and within our home, I lived this love of life and family on a daily basis. Outside of our home, my mother engaged in various Pro-Life activities earning her many awards, including the Papal Award-Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice.

In the early 1990’s, my mother worked with Mrs. Barbara Henkels to bring the first Rosary Congresses to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul with Fr. Janton. Our whole family was involved in one way or another. We would make holy hours praying the rosary before the Eucharist. Or we might be found helping to get the word out. So it is with this knowledge that I am happy to see the Rosary Congresses continuing to this day.

The Rosary Congresses help us to not only honor our heavenly Mother, but they bring us into a closer union with her Son, Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament. It is the very nature of our heavenly Mother to draw us closer to her Son. That is her greatest desire, that her children should come to Him. By praying her rosary, she takes us by the hand and walks us through the life of Christ, her beloved Son, and shows us the love He has for each one of us. Beginning with His great act of humility to leave His glory in Heaven and become a babe in the womb and then totally dependent in the arms of His Mother, she leads us through His childhood, to His public ministry, His procuring for us the means to remain with us even unto the end of the world, even unto His ignominious death on Calvary, the greatest act of love this world has known. And still she shows us the hope we can have in Him through His Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

The Rosary Congress is a very special time set apart by Our Lady whereby she can fill each one of her children with grace from Her Son in the Eucharist as they participate in the prayers and Sacraments during this holy and grace-filled week. It is a week of worship, adoration, rosaries, Masses, confessions, reparation, and all that is good in the eyes of Our Lord.

In memory of my mom, a dedicated wife and mother of nine, I invite you to bring your neighbor to Jesus in the Eucharist by prayerfully considering joining with a friend and bringing the Rosary Congress to your diocese. You can bet you will have the help and guidance of Our Lady!

God bless,

Bishop Joseph Coffey
